Sheridan Spire Dawn Redwood has green foliage which emerges light green in spring. The ferny bipinnately compound leaves turn an outstanding coppery-bronze in the fall. Neither the flowers nor the fruit are ornamentally significant. The peeling indian red bark adds an interesting dimension to the landscape. Landscape Attributes. Dawn Redwood or Fossil Tree is a deciduous conifer. Originally thought to be extinct, but (re) discovered in 1941 as a fossil and later growing in the wild near the town of Modaoqi, China. The Arnold Arboretum sent out an expedition to collect seeds which were shared across the world. Metasequoia is closely related to, and resembles, Taxodium (bald cyress) and Sequoia (redwood). Pyramidal straight trunked tree with horizontal branching. Soft, bright green linear foliage (needles) borne on branchlets look like feathery plumes. Remain bright green during summer and turn orange-brown in fall. This deciduous conifer has green deciduous and brown persistent stems, the former dropping, with the needles, in the fall. Male flowers appear in racemes and female flowers are solitary (cone-like) Small, dark brown cones (3cm long) hang from long stalks. Download sonos mac controller. Reddish-brown bark when young, becomes dark gray, fissured and exfoliating with age, with the trunk base becoming buttressed and fluted (impressive!). The tree eventually grows to 30 to 35m, so plan ahead. Will grow in wet soils, and will tolerate dry soils (once established) Best grown in full sun in a moist, sheltered location (late frosts can damage young spring growth).
